Draw characters built to move.Â
Â
Animation begins with great drawings. In this four-week studio, young artists explore the drawing skills animators use to make characters clear, expressive, and easy to move. Students experiment with simple shapes, strong poses, facial expressions, and sequential drawings while building toward a character action sheet. The emphasis is on playful discovery rather than technical anatomy: students learn useful fundamentals without losing the fun that made them love drawing in the first place.
Â
What Students will Learn:
Simple shapes and construction; line of action; readable poses; facial expression; drawing the same character consistently; basic movement and sequential thinking.
Â
4-Week Project Arc:
Week 1: Build expressive characters from simple shapes and create pose explorations.
Week 2: Draw clear actions using line of action, balance, and exaggeration.
Week 3: Explore expressions and draw the same character in a short sequence.
Week 4: Combine the strongest work into a polished animation-ready character action sheet.
Â
Final Project:
Animation-ready character action sheet with poses, expressions, and a short movement sequence.
Â
Recommended Student / Fit:
Ages 8–12 who enjoy drawing characters. No animation experience required.
Â
Outcome:
Students leave with stronger character-drawing habits and a first understanding of how drawings become animation — while completing something fun enough to want to show off.
